CNN’s Fareed Zakaria Castigates Liberal Intolerance

Posted by Steve Markowitz on June 1, 2017

This Blogger has often discussed with associates on the Left concerns about the media’s and educational industry’s strong Leftists tilt.  Many of these Liberals respond by either denying this bias or incredibly stating that they see just the opposite, the media’s tilt towards the Right.  They ignore the educational industry’s Liberal bias since this bias is unarguable by any interpretation.

Liberals choose to ignore the clear evidence of the bias of both the media and educational industry since this strong bias goes against what used to be a main tenant of Liberalism, open and unhindered discussion on any issue.

Recently, there have been signs that even some of the Left have become concerned by the intolerance by Progressives.  CNN host Fareed Zakaria, who has often been strongly criticized towards President Trump, recently castigated fellow liberals for intolerance, as shown in the video below.

Zakaria starts by comparing his reception while giving a Bucknell commencement speech to that VP Mike Pence received while giving a commencement speech at Notre Dame University.  Pence was rudely interrupted as 100 students turn their back and walked out of the speech.

Zakaria went on to share another example where U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy Devos was rudely booed while giving a commencement address at Bethune-Cookman University.  In concluding, Zakaria said:

  • “American universities these days seem to be committed to every kind of diversity – except intellectual diversity. Conservative voices and views, already a besieged minority, are being
  • “Freedom of speech and thought is not just for warm, fuzzy ideas that we find comfortable. It’s for ideas that we find offensive”.
  • “There is, as we all know, a kind of anti-intellectualism on the right these days. Denial of facts, of reason, of science.  But there is also an anti-intellectualism on the left.  An attitude of self-righteousness that says we are so pure, we are so morally superior, we cannot bear to hear an idea with which we disagree.”
  • Liberals think they are tolerant, but often they aren’t”.

While it is comforting that some Left-leaning intellects like Zakaria are finally speaking out on the intolerance of Progressives, the fact that they allowed the Fascist behavior to go on for decades questions their motivation.  The damage done to American society and free speech as a result of the intolerance may not be repairable.  It is difficult to put a genie back in a bottle once the cork is pulled.  It will be difficult for Leftists who so strongly believe in their moral superiority to start listening to others’ points of view.

California Taxing and Regulating Itself into Bankruptcy

Posted by Steve Markowitz on October 26, 2015

Victor Davis Hanson published a piece in the nationalreview.com titled “Can California be Saved?”.  This article offers a clear indication that California is a canary in the mine for the social and economic decay in America.  Hanson shares the following facts for the State:

  • Los Angeles’s violent crime is up nearly 21% for the first half of 2015 with an 11% increase in property crimes. One cause is California’s Proposition 47 passed in 2014 that released thousands of prisoners.  Proposition 47 was an attempt by California to its costs for the prison system.  Costs may be down, but crime is skyrocketing.
  • California is in the fifth year of a significant drought. This could be alleviated had the State followed through with a new reservoir system approved under California Water Project.  Lack of funding caused projects to be unfinished.
  • California’s traffic accidents have increased by 13% during in last three years. A significant cause is deteriorating roads that are not properly maintained.  It is hard to imagine why a state that includes some of the highest taxes in the country cannot repair its own roads.
  • California is awash with natural resources, yet its gasoline and electricity costs are amongst the highest in the country. Progressive policies inflicted by wealthy liberals who can bear these expenses are the cause.  However, these high costs devastate lower income brackets, a typical unintended consequence of Progressive policies.
  • Approximately 33% of America’s welfare recipients reside in California with nearly 25% of the State’s residents falling below the poverty line. This is unconscionable considering where that state was economically just a few decades ago.

Who is responsible for this sad state of California’s economics?  It is politically expedient to blame the wealthy or nasty conservatives.  However, given that many of the wealthy in California are liberals and all major government offices in the State are controlled by Democrats, this dog just doesn’t hunt.

California can be considered one of the great experiments for American Progressives.  Liberal politicians promised to fix societal ills with all sorts of interventions.  The fact that these ills are larger today than when the liberals started their experimentation and have spent trillions implementing the policies is proof they failed.  In addition, a significant portion of these poorly spent funds were but a form of crony capitalism, benefiting the social services, education and other industries

Adding insult to injury, Progressive policies distorted the economic diversity of the State.  Those considering starting businesses are likely to leave California in search of more business friendly environments.  Those wanting to build wealth for their families moved to states with less aggressive tax policies.  In addition, immigrants found California’s easy to obtain social benefits and naturally matriculated to this environment.  The result; California is top-heavy with those who being pulled in the cart then those pulling it.  The cart is now being bogged down in a quagmire.

California needs to change its political and economic ways if it is to remain solvent.  Before a plan can be created to implement change, it is necessary that the State become introspective and ask why and how California has deteriorated so much over the past five decades.  The answer will be painful for many.

Liberals Blaming the Victim

Posted by Steve Markowitz on May 17, 2015

Liberals often use victimhood as a centerpiece for their philosophies and policies.  Whether it be based on one’s sex, skin color or sexual orientation, Liberals find victims.  There are exceptions to Liberals focus on victims if it relates to political correctness with the contemporary main benefactor of that anomaly being Radical Islam.

On Friday unabashed Liberal, Bill Maher, took Liberals to task for giving Radical Islam a pass during an interview with Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a former follower of Islam who has become a champion of women’s rights.  When asked by Maher about the Left’s very on liberal approach to Radical Islam, Ali said: “I say to them that the cancer of Islamic extremism is an assault on liberalism, on liberal ideas.

The video below should be shown on every college campus.  However, that would open up the colleges to intellectual debate, which is no longer tolerated by the Left.

Liberal Professor Compares Tea Party to Nazis

Posted by Steve Markowitz on December 9, 2014

Academia is supposed to be a place where ideas can be debated and studied openly so that open minds can come to informed conclusions.  Unfortunately, in many colleges today that is not the case.  Instead, Leftist professors use positions of power to intimidate and indoctrinate those they are supposed to teach in order to pursue their own political agendas.  While this has been going on for decades, today’s inexpensive video recording technology has exposed this travesty.

Dr. Blake Armstrong of South Texas College, Weslaco, Texas, is a psychology professor who was recently caught red-handed pursuing his Leftist agenda.  Knowing that his remarks were political and not educational, Armstrong asked students not to “tell anybody” about his so-called lecture.  However, one student flipped on a video phone camera saving the professor’s inappropriate lecture for cyberspace, as posted below.  Armstrong’s Tea Party bashing comments included:

In 1931, which was really interesting, the Nazis — people were kind of tired of them.  They’ve been around since 1920, 11 years now.  They’ve won seats — they’re like the tea party!  That’s such a good example,” and “but in the sense of how they politically came to power, there’s a good analogy there.  That eventually people realized, ‘Oh, these Nazis are a bunch of nuts,’  ‘These tea party people are a bunch of nuts.’  I mean, the analogy really is a good analogy.”

It is fair to disagree with the Tea Party’s Libertarian views as well as its strict interpretation of the Constitution.  However, to compare them to Nazis is not meant to spur intellectual discussion, but rather demonize some Americans in an effort to thwart legitimate debate.  This is all too often the goal of liberal academia.

Many industries are today being revolutionized and made less expensive for consumers through new technologies.  The higher education industry has so far avoided this mainly due to governmental interference whose manipulation of student debt (loans) has allowed the inefficiencies to continue.  This is why cost of higher education increase has outstripped inflation for decades.  It has resulted in the current aggregate student debt exceeding $1 trillion, an amount greater than all consumer credit card debt.  This unsustainable economic path will soon be a controlling factor for Progressive educators, such as Blake Armstrong.  Students will start demanding real education that betters their lives, rather than accepting police indoctrination.  However, since Dr. Armstrong likely never took Econ 101, he is oblivious to the unstoppable forces of supply and demand that will ultimately act to curtail lame educators such as he.

Al Sharpton Refuses to Pay His Fair Share

Posted by Steve Markowitz on November 23, 2014

Liberals are all for wealth redistribution until the tax man comes for their assets.  Examples include the mega-rich Kennedy clan continuing to live off the riches that patriarch Joseph created before, during and after the Great Depression.  More recently Secretary of State John Kerry, who gained his wealth by marrying into the Heinz catchup family, was caught moving his multimillion dollar yacht to a state with significantly lower taxes than Massachusetts charges.

SharptonThe current outrageous example of tax avoidance by a wealthy liberal is Al Sharpton.  While it is difficult to determine exactly how Sharpton obtained his substantial wealth, he is currently a MSNBC host and often a visitor to the Barack Obama White.  He is a member of the top 10%.  Remarkably, in an article titled “As Sharpton Rose, So Did His Unpaid Taxes”, the New York Times reported that this Progressive owes $4.5 million in unpaid taxes.

When confronted with the unpaid tax issue in a recent interview, Sharpton’s first excuse was that “we’re talking about old taxes”.  Then, he went into the victim mode even inferring racism:

“I think it’s political, he said. A lot of people don’t like the fact that President Obama’s the president.  A lot of people do not like the fact that Bill de Blasio won for mayor.  And they certainly don’t like that I’m still here, and I ain’t going nowhere.”

It is hard to fault Sharpton for not wanting to pay taxes that are often excessive.  However, his unwillingness to do so given his Progressive views is hypocritical.  Those with means who preach and rationalize the societal benefits of the welfare state and wealth redistribution should be first in line pay their fair share.  The fact that so many do not is another indication that their political motives are not so righteous.

Faith in Government at New Lows

Posted by Steve Markowitz on December 21, 2013

A recent CBS News poll indicates a significant shift in American public opinion towards government.  Americans trust in government is at historic lows, as indicated in the first chart below.  Given this it is not surprising that 63% of Americans believe that government is doing too much.  This does not bode well for Liberals who promote the government and governmental solutions as the way to solve societal ills.

For the past three years President Obama has blamed problems on the “do-nothing” Republicans in Congress.  The results of this poll would seem to indicate that the American people want more of less action.  Still, the Republican Congress must accept some fault in the negativism Americans have towards government.  However, this is greatly overshadowed by the inept action of government in general and more specifically the Obama administration.

The Obama administration’s failures include the catastrophic implementation of Obamacare.  The very word “Obamacare” has become synonymous with inept government.  However, the NSA snooping, the IRS scandal, “fast and furious”, failures such as the wasteful Solyndra “investment”, and America’s inept response to the ongoing mess in the Middle East have shown almost a continuous failure of government since Obama’s first election.  In fact, if it were not for the successful hit Obama put on bin Laden, his failure rate would be almost perfect.

The government’s failure in recent years should not come as a surprise.  First, we have had at the helm of the executive branch for the past five years a person with no prior executive experience.  In addition, the growth in government over recent decades has made an inefficient bureaucracy even more cumbersome to operate.

The CBS News poll opens opportunity for Republicans, but by no means a guarantee.  The GOP has been inept over the years and many of its politicians are more concerned with their reelection then governing, just like the Democrats.  In fact, Americans distrust for government may be an opening for a libertarian-type third-party movement.  It is likely that continued inept government programs will stoke the fire of such movements.

Debt Ceiling and Liberal Partisanship

Posted by Steve Markowitz on July 8, 2011

President Obama often uses class-warfare rhetoric in an effort to continue the unsustainable deficit spending in Washington.  Any who oppose raising the debt ceiling is either a radical or uncaring right winger.  It is a sign of the Progressive times when those that no longer want to steal from our children are accused of being in the wrong!

It is instructive to recall what the Left thought of deficits and the debt ceiling when George W. Bush was President.  For example, in 2006 then Senator Barack Obama voted against raising the debt ceiling.  The only thing that has changes since then is that the amount of debt now owed by the United States is trillions higher.

The Leftist press has not called Obama on his flip-flop on the debt ceiling.  That is not surprising since they too have done an about face on this issue.  Newsbuster.org has published a reminder of the flip-flop on the debt ceiling by Leftist commentators Andrea Mitchell and Chris Matthews, copied below.

It is evident the Leftist press and their political allies have but one goal: redistribution of wealth, as long as it is not theirs.  Whether or not that goal leads to the meltdown of Western economies does not seem to be a part of their equation.

President Obama Extends Patriot Act

Posted by Steve Markowitz on May 31, 2011

At the later part of his European jaunt, President Obama extended two key parts of the USA Patriot Act for four years.  The provisions that required renewal are the roving wiretaps for an individual rather than a specific line, and court-ordered searches of business records and surveillance of non-American, so-called “lone wolf” suspects.  In signing the extensions the President said: “It’s an important tool for us to continue dealing with an ongoing terrorist threat.”

Opposition to extending the Patriot Act comes from an unusual coalition of conservative-Libertarians and Civil-liberty liberals.  Both sides see the dangers of a government that grows more powerful with each new crisis; real or imagined.

It is remarkable that with candidate Obama’s many complaints about his predecessor, George W. Bush’s civil liberties related actions, the President continues down his predecessor’s path since taking office.  This latest example joins Obama’s decision to leave GITMO open.  In June 2007, Obama promised: “While we’re at it, we’re going to close Guantanamo.  And we’re going to restore habeas corpus.  …..  We’re going to lead by example – by not just word but by deed.  That’s our vision for the future.”

This President’s vision is clear hard to pin down.  Just as troubling is the mainstream media’s unwillingness to question the President on his broken promises.  When Progressives are starting wars (Libya) or trampling on civil liberties, the silence from the media and Leftist in general is deafening.

NPR Executive Ron Schiller Caught on Video Spewing Hate

Posted by Steve Markowitz on March 8, 2011

National Public Radio (NPR) exec Ron Schiller, who just announced he would be leaving the network, was captured on camera attacking conservatives, Christians, the Tea Party, Jewish media and Juan Williams.  This is disconcerting considering the hundreds of millions of dollars that NPR receives from the taxpayers to subsidize this Leftist network.

The video tape was created by conservative filmmaker, James O’Keefe, without Schiller’s knowledge.  Two actors, who posed as members of a Muslim Brotherhood front group that was considering donating $5 million to NPR, recorded Schiller in the video below saying:

  • The current Republican Party, particularly the Tea Party, is fanatically involved in people’s personal lives and very fundamental Christian – I wouldn’t even call it Christian.  It’s this weird evangelical kind of move.” Schiller then added that the Republican Party, was “hijacked by this group.”
  • Schiller said of the Tea Party that they aren’t “just Islamaphobic, but really xenophobic, I mean basically they are, they believe in sort of white, middle-America gun-toting. I mean, it’s scary.  They’re seriously racist, racist people.”
  • As to liberals, Shiller said: “In my personal opinion, liberals today might be more educated, fair and balanced than conservatives.”
  • The actors informed Schiller that they were meeting in a Georgetown restaurant because, “the Zionist coverage is quite substantial elsewhere.”
  • When one of the actors said they were “not too upset about maybe a little bit less Jew influence of money into NPR,” Schiller indicated that he doesn’t find “Zionist or pro-Israel” ideas at NPR, “even among funders.  I mean it’s there in those who own newspapers, obviously, but no one owns NPR.”
  • Schiller indicates that he is “most disappointed by in this country, which is that the educated, so-called elite in this country is too small a percentage of the population, so that you have this very large un-educated part of the population that carries these ideas.
  • Schiller said he is “very proud of” how NPR fired Juan WilliamsWhat NPR stood for is non-racist, non-bigoted, straightforward telling of the news and our feeling is that if a person expresses his or her opinion, which anyone is entitled to do in a free society, they are compromised as a journalist.”

For those few who still believed NPR to be an unbiased news source worthy of taxpayers’ funds, Schiller help put a dagger in the heart of that fairytale.

Late in the meeting Schiller made is most appropriate statements when he said: “Well frankly, it is clear that we (NPR) would be better off in the long-run without federal funding.  The challenge right now is that if we lost it all together we would have a lot of stations go dark,”  and added that: “Yes, NPR would definitely survive and most of the stations would survive.

Mr. Schiller has the right to any harebrain opinions he can come up with.  However, NPR as a government-sponsored entity, has no such right.  Their backing of Progressive causes is a conflict of interest, one where they promote the Liberal agenda and in return Democrats pay them back with taxpayer finds.  That corruptive connection must be broken by removing all taxpayer funded subsidies to the network.  As Schiller has already admitted: “NPR would definitely survive and most of the stations would survive.
