Rush Limbaugh Spanked by the Left

Posted by Steve Markowitz on March 6, 2012

Last week, Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown law student, made a rather ridiculous presentation to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.  Ms. Fluke proffered the position that free access to birth control, even from the Catholic University, is a woman’s right.  Left unsaid was where this right supposedly comes from; certainly not the US Constitution or the Bible.

Ms. Fluke’s presentation was the subject of this Blog’s March 1 posting, “Georgetown University Law Student Demand Birth Control from Catholic University“.  At about the same time, conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh resorted to some nasty name calling in an effort to denigrate capital.  This included calling her a “slut”.  Limbaugh’s comments were not only uncalled for, but allowed the discussion to get off track on this issue to focus on his unprofessional behavior, rather than Ms. Fluke’s illogical arguments.  It is ironic that Limbaugh, who often professes a strong belief in the U.S. Constitution and the individual freedoms it offers, felt the need to delve into someone else’s private life.  Then again, Limbaugh is to a great extent an entertainer.

Not to be outdone by Limbaugh’s indiscretion on this matter, President Obama jumped into the fray.  Smelling the potential for political hay, the President phoned Ms. Fluke in what White House press secretary Jay Carney said was Obama’s desire to “express his disappointment that she has been the subject of inappropriate personal attacks and to thank her for exercising her rights as a citizen to speak out on an issue of public policy.”

Obama’s call to Ms. Fluke was inappropriate on many levels.  First, with important issues facing this Country including the dangers of a nuclear Iran and the ongoing worldwide financial problems, the President should stay clear of trivial political issues.  In addition, Obama and the Left so often remained quiet as their Progressive comrades have made misogynistic comments.  For example, where was President Obama when Bill Maher, whose super PAC contributed $1 million to the Obama campaign, called Sarah Palin the “C” word?  Why hasn’t the President returned the money to Maher’s PAC?  Clearly, Obama’s concern for women is purely political.

Freedom of speech must be protected at all costs in this Country including allowing people to say distasteful or obnoxious things.  At the same time, Limbaugh is being appropriately hurt for the indiscretion as some advertisers have already supporting his show financially.  That is democracy and capitalism at work.  However, the Left’s crocodile tears for Ms. Fluke are nearly as grotesque as Limbaugh’s poor behavior.

The problem with Ms. Fluke’s presentation to the Democratic political meeting gathering was her logic, not her personal behavior.  Unlike some of the fringe issues Ms. Fluke raised during her presentation, the birth control pill is used nearly always to allow certain sexual behavior to have less consequences; i.e. making those actions purely recreational.  Government should play no role in either helping or hindering that behavior as long as it’s between consenting adults.  Instead of the name calling.

Limbaugh should is suggested to Fluke that she not ask fellow citizens to subsidize her recreational behavior.  Having sex is a choice.  Using birth control pills is a choice.  Being a student at 30 years of age and at a Catholic institution is also a choice.  It’s time for Ms. Fluke to take some responsibility for her choices in life.

Georgetown University Law Student Demands Birth Control from Catholic University

Posted by Steve Markowitz on March 1, 2012

A stunning display of the entitlement mentality and Progressive illogic was on display earlier this week, orchestrated by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.  The staged event was at the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee meeting.  The purpose was to show support President Obama’s decision to force even religious institutions to supply no charge birth control services.  Conveniently for these Progressives, the only witness called was Ms. Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown University Law School student and “reproductive rights activists”.

The video of Ms. Fluke’s testimony posted below is instructive and demonstrates the narcissism from the Left that is ingrained with a deep-seated entitlement mentality.  Her testimony included the following:

  • Forty percent of the female students at Georgetown Law reported to us that they struggled financially as a result of this policy [Lack of free contraceptives].”  –  This is a curious claim coming from students who can afford to attend a law school whose tuition alone cost about $24,000 per year.
  • Without insurance coverage, contraception, as you know, can cost a woman over $3,000 during law school.”  –  While this Blog is not an expert on birth control costs, a quick search of the Internet indicates condoms can be purchased for approximately $1.00 each.  At this price, Georgetown students would need to be quite “active” to spend $1,000 per year on contraceptives.
  • We refuse to pick between a quality education and our health and we resent that, in the 21st Century, anyone thinks it’s acceptable to ask us to make that choice simply because we are women.”  –  To accept this nonsense from Ms. Fluke, one would have to believe that only Catholic universities supply quality education.  Preposterous!

Ms. Fluke understands the weakness of her arguments, as demonstrated by her even more outrageous attempt to victimize women her presentation.  While nearly all of the discussions relating to contraceptives involve to birth control and convenience, Fluke takes the argument in a completely different direction, attempting to make women the victims, rather than the religious institutions she would have the government attack.  Specifically, she raises an issue of a friend who supposedly required birth control pills for a medical condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome, but could not obtain them  Assuming this is be true, it does not relate to 40% of Georgetown’s female law students she first referred to.  This is a typical Leftist tactic of making any sub group in society a victim and using fringe issues to “prove” it.

When the discussion of abortion is raised by feminists like Ms. Fluke, the word “choice” is often used.  In fact, Fluke used this overused word in her presentation to the congressional group.  It is ironic that those who believe terminating a pregnancy is a choice seem have so much difficulty understanding that so is the sexual act that initiates pregnancies.

Obamacare’s Birth Control Edict Causing Furor

Posted by Steve Markowitz on February 10, 2012

President Obama’s supposed signature achievement has been the sweeping health-care reform often referred to as “Obamacare“.  Like most complex government plans, Obamacare will cause more disruptions for America’s healthcare system and the overall economy than the benefits it will offer.  While individual aspects of the massive legislation can be shown to be poorly planned, a simpler and broader explanation of its failings is more useful.  Specifically, Obamacare promises to offer insurance to millions who are currently uninsured without increasing America’s healthcare costs.  Preposterous!

It was broadly publicized that a part of Obamacare will force any institution or company that offer healthcare benefits to supply free birth control as part of the package.  This is an example of Progressives overreaching and forcing their liberal agenda on the greater public.

Any time Washington adds a forced benefit on states or private companies it increases the cost of supplying that benefit.  This guarantees that in the long run the service will become less available as supplying organizations will not be able to afford them.  This is basic Econ 101, a subject Progressives bypass in the elitist universities they attended.

In addition to the financial problems, the Obama Administration’s forced birth-control benefit has ramifications relating to governmental intrusion into freedom of religion.  Various religious organizations, including the Roman Catholic Church, have deep-seated beliefs that preclude the use of various birth control methods.  Irrespective of this, the Administration indicated it would force these religious institutions to offer the birth-control services as part of their healthcare packages.  The only option available for these institutions was to close or stop offering healthcare as a benefit.  Posted below is a letter publicized by the Archbishop of Philadelphia on this issue.

The New York Times today reported that the Obama Administration is feeling the political heat.  While the Administration has announced a compromise on the issue, reportedly it will not eliminate the intrusion into religious freedom.  It is remarkable that a President who is so sensitive to certain religious sensitivities, particularly those of Islam, has such low regard for the beliefs of others.  This political correctness is a typical manifestation of Progressive elitism that shows low regard for any overall moral philosophy.

President Obama’s intrusion into religious freedom is a continuation of his radical agenda to transform America.  Certainly Obama promised such actions.  Sadly many Americans in the middle of the political spectrum who voted for him did not heed his words.

The radical Progressives and feminist who approve of Obama’s agenda on birth control will ignore his intrusion on religious freedom.  They do so at their own peril given that government intrusion into individual rights is a slippery slope that has no bounds.

Obama Shows Partisanship and Insensitivity at Thanksgiving Event

Posted by Steve Markowitz on November 24, 2011

It is traditional that the White House is given turkeys for Thanksgiving and then pardons them from becoming edible parts of the celebration.  President Obama continued this tradition, but with what some will feel are inappropriate additions.

While pardoning two turkeys with an appropriate declaration that “we can’t wait to pardon these turkeys,” the President then went into some partisan politics stating: “Some of you may know that recently I’ve been taking a series of executive actions that don’t require congressional approvalWell, here’s another one.  We can’t wait to pardon these turkeys – literally.  Otherwise, they’d end up next to the mashed potatoes and stuffing.” In addition, Obama jokingly made the Sign of the Cross over a critter declaring: “You are hereby pardoned.”

It is remarkable that this President who often complains about the partisan divide in Washington cannot even leave politics out of a Thanksgiving Day tradition.  This same President who asks the Country to be more understanding of the sensitivities of the Islamic faith is rather callous when it comes to a sacred Catholic tradition.

The real turkeys in Washington are not those pardoned by the President.  They are in fact President Obama who refuses to take a public stance on the budgetary problems facing America, as well as both political parties in the Congress and Senate who have been just as negligent.  Last week’s failure of the Super Committee proves this group to be made up of turkeys.
