Feds Attack Florida for Trying to Stop Noncitizens from Voting

Posted by Steve Markowitz on June 1, 2012

The Miami Herald reported a story that is the epitome of federal government overreaching and political intervention.  Florida’s elections bureau was purging its voter rolls of noncitizens, i.e. those not eligible to vote.  While common sense indicates this to be a no-brainer, the US Department of Justice has ordered Florida to stop the effort.

According to the DOJ, Florida’s actions violate the 1965 Voting Rights Act and the 1993 National Voter Registration Act.  Here’s the government’s lame logic.  Since most of the illegal aliens are Hispanics and dark skinned, purging them from the voter rolls is discriminatory.  Left unsaid is the fact that these illegals are potential Obama voters.

So let’s see.  Enforcing the law now becomes dependent on one’s skin color.  We have sure come a long way baby!

California Passes Dream Act

Posted by Steve Markowitz on October 8, 2011

Jerry Brown had his first stint as governor of California from 1975 to 1983.  Even in that state known for the unusual, the good governor earned the nickname “Governor Moonbeam” in recognition his strange ideas and policies.

In 2010, Brown was again elected governor of California.  It seems that age has not dulled his love for wacky ideas.  Today the governor signed the California Dream Act that will allow students who are undocumented immigrants to obtain state funded financial aid. Upon signing the act, Brown said: “The Dream Act benefits us all by giving top students a chance to improve their lives and the lives of all of us”.

Left unsaid by Brown is that the State, facing a $25 billion deficit for 2011, forced the governor to cut state spending by over $12 billion and increase taxes by $12 billion.  To add new benefits of any sort, especially for illegal aliens, is Progressive lunacy.  Welcome back Governor Moonbeam.

Senator Dick Durbin Show Ignorance of Constitution

Posted by Steve Markowitz on June 30, 2011

The DREAM Act (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) is proposed legislation that, if enacted, would provide permanent residency for some illegal alien students that graduate from US high schools.  It is one of various attempts by Progressives to bring an open border policy to the United States.

This week leftist Senator Dick Durbin, Democrat from Illinois, showed his ignorance of the Constitution he swore to uphold during at a Senate hearing when he made the following statement to the aliens he asked to stand up:

When I look around this room, I see America’s future. Our doctors, our teachers, our nurses, our engineers, our scientists, our soldiers, our Congressman, our Senators and maybe our President.” (See video below)

Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution says: “No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President.”

Durbin’s comments indicate that he is either ignorant of the Constitution, or worse, that he follows it only when it is politically expedient.  That makes him a knucklehead, dangerous or both.

DREAM Act Defeated in Senate

Posted by Steve Markowitz on December 20, 2010

A vote on the DREAM act was cut off by the Senate last week.  That act would have allowed children of illegal aliens a pathway to citizenship if they would take certain steps, such as serving in the U.S. military or graduate from college.

While the intent of the DREAM act may have been noble, the overall effect of it would have significant negative consequences for society as a whole.  First, the act rewards illegal behavior.  Such a feel-good modification to laws in order to assuage some constituency is a slippery slope that should be especially troublesome to minorities in this Country.  If the rule of law can be modified at the hands of the radical Left, it can just as easily by modified by the radical Right.  History has shown that there is little difference between Communist and Fascists.  The only legitimate tools keeping either from gaining power are the Constitution and the rule of law.  Neither should be tampered with by zealots on either side of the isle.

8 percent of U.S. Births to Illegal Aliens

Posted by Steve Markowitz on August 12, 2010

According to the Pew Hispanic Center in cooperation with the Census Bureau, 8 percent of births in the United States during 2008 were to illegal aliens.  That’s about 340,000 babies.

While illegal aliens compose about 4 percent of the U.S.’s adult population, due to high birthrates, their children are a much larger share of the newborn population, equaling about 7 percent of those younger than 18.

These simple numbers tell a story of crisis and one reason that the Country’s finances are in havoc.  The Progressives started this crisis by creating a nanny-state with handouts for all sorts of issues.  Then, they allowed the handouts to be given to illegal immigrants and their offspring.  That opened the floodgates at our southern border.

The illegals are not to be blamed for wanting benefits that they cannot receive in their own countries.  It is the Progressives who created this mess and now force us to seal the borders.  Now these Progressives claim “racism” against anyone who demands corrective action.  The numbers prove this claim to be fallacious.

Mexico’s Violence Can No Longer be Ignored

Posted by Steve Markowitz on July 26, 2010

While the Obama Administration wastes taxpayer money fighting Arizona for its attempt to secure its border with Mexican, the President ignores the serious problems on our southern border.

Violence and corruption is not new to Mexico.  However, it has escalated to a level that we can no longer ignore.  The Associated Press reported that drug traffickers used a car bomb for the first time, killing a police officer and two others with high-tech explosives.  They seem to be learning from other terrorists groups.

Last week Mexican authorities discovered 51 bodies in a trash dump near the northern city of Monterrey, blaming it on drug gangs.  This follows a similar finding in the city of Taxco a few weeks ago when 55 bodies were stuffed into a mine, again drug gang related.  These are but examples of the violence that has claimed some 25,000 lives in Mexico’s drug war since 2006.

Mexico’s violence and corruption points to the possibility that it will become a failed state.  It is no wonder that so many people want to leave that country.  As sad as this is for the innocents, this situation is dangerous for the United States and demands that we secure our borders.  Without proactive action the growing violence will spill over to the U.S. side of the border.

We must also consider other proactive steps to resolve the problems at our southern border.  Progressives blame America’s liberal gun laws for the violence, which is a simplistic and unrealistic explanation.  Even if Americans stop selling guns to Mexicans it would not stop the gangs from obtaining them.  The world is awash with guns and Mexican drug-lords have all the money required to buy them from many sources.

No, the problem is as it typically is; money and greed.  As long as the drug-lords can reap huge profits from selling drugs the violence will escalate.  It is the profit potential that America has culpability in for Mexico’s problems.  Our country must do its part to stamp out the profit for dealing in the drugs.  That leaves us with two alternatives:

1. Continue with drugs being illegal and use laws and interdiction in an effort to stop the sale of drugs; or

2. Legalize drugs, lowering their price to the point where gangs cannot profit from the trade.

Given the billions that America has spent over decades on the first approach, its failure proves it not to be viable solution. A free society is unwilling to give law enforcement the “rules” required to tackle such a widespread problem.

That leaves us with the second option.  Many on the Right go ballistic at the thought of legalizing drugs and base their outrage on moral grounds.  This Ostrich approach ignores reality.  Making drugs illegal does little to limit availability.  Drugs are readily available to all Americans, even our younger children.  The billions wasted annually attempting to enforce drug laws can be better spent on education, rehabilitation and relating tasks.

Americans bare some responsible for the growing violence in Mexico due to the drug trade.  Should Mexico fall into anarchy, we will pay an even steeper price than we currently are.  It is not our guns that have brought power to the Mexican drug gangs; it is our money.  Only by stopping the flow of money to these gangs can the problem be addressed and our border made secure.

Democrat Governors Don’t Like Obama’s Lawsuit Against Arizona

Posted by Steve Markowitz on July 13, 2010

The New York Times reported that various governors, including Democrats, are unhappy with Obama’s lawsuit against Arizona.  One Democrat, Governor Phil Bredesen of Tennessee said: “Universally the governors are saying, ‘We’ve got to talk about jobs.  And all of a sudden we have immigration going on.”  …..  “It is such a toxic subject, such an important time for Democrats.”  Another, Governor Christine Gregoire of Washington stated: “They described for me a list of things that they are doing to try and help on that border.  And I said, ‘The public doesn’t know that.’ ”

So now Democrat governors are joining over 60% of Americans that have problems with the Obama Administration suing Arizona for its immigration law.  But this President cares little about the will of the people or even politicians from his own Party.  Obama promised “change” and conveniently avoided telling the public what that meant.  He is determined to implement that “change” irrespective of what his employer, the U.S. citizens’, desire.  In the private sector that is called insubordination and grounds for dismissal.  In government, it is merely arrogance.

Peggy West, Democrat Country Supervisor from Wisconsin.

Posted by Steve Markowitz on June 26, 2010

The Progressives and loony-Left often resort to the narrative that those that disagree with them are lacking in intelligence and education.  Through this narrative they attempt to get a pass on legitimate debate of the issues.  This approach was successful enough in 2008 to get Barack Obama elected president without one day of executive experience to his credit.  The folly of that approach shows since the election.

Talking of intellect and the Left, the video below of Peggy West is incredible.  Ms. West, a County Supervisor from Wisconsin, wants her town to boycott Arizona for their audacity of wanting to enforce immigration laws.  How crude of them!

In defense of her position Ms. West proffers the view that Arizona’s law is unacceptable since that State, unlike Texas, does not have a border with Mexico.  Progressive intellect in action!  Facts be damned; if it sounds good say it.  Why not, Ms. West saw it work so well during the last presidential election.

I have a suggestion for the good folks in Wisconsin.  First, check Ms. West’s resume carefully.  If she indeed did finish high school, or heaven forbid college, pull their accreditation!
