Hollywood’s Complicity in the Weinstein Scandal

Posted by Steve Markowitz on October 20, 2017

The rich and famous in Hollywood make a habit of lecturing America on values.  Most often these values are Progressive and far left of center in a political context.  The recent outing of one of Hollywood most significant elitist, Harvey Weinstein as a serial sex predator demonstrates hypocrisy in that wealthy community.

Inappropriate behavior is not limited to any political view.  It is an equal opportunity affliction.  However, Hollywood’s cone of silence and cover-up to protect Weinstein over many years is an indication of deep-seated dishonesty within that community.  The fact that Hollywood’s strong Leftist’s leanings that include suppose concern for women’s rights were trumped to protect one of its own is deeply troubling.

Since the Weinstein scandal went public, the number of women who claim to have been mistreated by the movie mogul over many years continually increases.  The sheer number involved, many who are now powerful figures, make it difficult to understand how this cover-up occurred.  More troubling are the number of Hollywood males who were aware of Weinstein’s proclivities and only did not go public, but heaped praise on Weinstein for years.  This group includes famed Quentin Tarantino who admitted to the New York Times that “I knew enough to do more than I did.

Tarantino’s confession is too little, too late.  It will be followed by many others from Hollywood elitists.  Without their complicity, many young women would have been spared trauma caused by one of their own.

Pro Israeli Letter Signed by Hollywood

Posted by Steve Markowitz on August 24, 2014

Hollywooders are generally known for Leftist political views.  With that, they have not been known for supporting Israel and many have publicly criticized Israel for its military response to Hamas’s rockets.

However, not all in Hollywood are devoid of moral convictions.  A group called Creative Community for Peace recently came out with a strong pro-Israeli statement concerning its battle with Hamas. This statement includes: “Hamas cannot be allowed to rain rockets on Israeli cities, nor can it be allowed to hold its own people hostage,” and “hospitals are for healing, not for hiding weapons. Schools are for learning, not for launching missiles.”

The list of 200 Hollywood signees below includes many on the Right, and Left.  This coming together shows promise coalescing around an issue with clear moral clarity.  It is unfortunate that the Obama Administration has shown no such clarity and more often than not acts like it is merely a mediator between two opposing groups.  The recent horrible events in Iraq perpetrated by another Sunni-based radical Islamist group ISIS, makes the White House’s position even less comprehendible.

Creative Community for Peace statement

We, the undersigned, are saddened by the devastating loss of life endured by Israelis and Palestinians in Gaza. We are pained by the suffering on both sides of the conflict and hope for a solution that brings peace to the region.

While we stand firm in our commitment to peace and justice, we must also stand firm against ideologies of hatred and genocide which are reflected in Hamas’ charter, Article 7 of which reads, “There is a Jew hiding behind me, come on and kill him!”  The son of a Hamas founder has also commented about the true nature of Hamas.

Hamas cannot be allowed to rain rockets on Israeli cities, nor can it be allowed to hold its own people hostage.  Hospitals are for healing, not for hiding weapons.  Schools are for learning, not for launching missiles.  Children are our hope, not our human shields.

We join together in support of the democratic values we all cherish and in the hope that the healing and transformative power of the arts can be used to build bridges of peace.

Capture creative community for peace

Leftist Actors Accused of Anti-Semitism

Posted by Steve Markowitz on August 3, 2014

In previous postings this Blog has proffered the view that the dangers of racism and anti-Semitism emanating from Progressives and Leftists are increasing.  This view is in opposite of the narrative the Left promotes of its views.  However, their actions demonstrate a dark side of their philosophies.

Relating to racism, or for that matter sexism, the Left often promotes the view that people of color, as well as women, are somehow unable to complete on a level playing field in the business and academic world.  The numbers of African Americans and women in high places of government and all sectors of the world proves this to be fallacious.  That raises questions as to the nations behind the Left’s continued use of this narrative.  At best it is to support industries that profit from the narrative.  The alternative is darker.

Jon VoightConcerning anti-Semitism, many on the Left now have a strong anti-Israeli bias.  In an effort to cover up the building anti-Semitism within the movement, criticism is typically couched with claims such as they are not anti-Semitic, but merely anti-Israeli policy.  While Israel, as with any country, should be open to criticism, the vitriol behind the Left’s attacks, as well as the disproportionate use of these attacks against Israel, indicate a motivation that goes beyond policy disagreements.  The open anti-Semitism openly promoted by Hamas, other Muslim radicals, and in the protests currently ongoing in various countries, also supports this conclusion.

Hollywood is not only one of the most vocal proponents of Leftist philosophies in the United States, but also a significant monetary contributor to politicians who promote Leftist causes, including President Obama.  That is not to say that all in Hollywood share the leftist dogma.

One actor who has been an outspoken critic of the Left is Jon Voight.  This week Voight attacked fellow actors including Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz for signing an open letter that was highly critical of Israel’s war against Hamas.  Voigt did not pull any punches accusing his fellow actors of fanning the flames of worldwide anti-Semitism.  Excerpts supplied by The Hollywood Reporter are included below, a refreshing view that is to avoid of political correctness or double-talk.

Jon Voight:

I am heartsick that people like Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem could incite anti-Semitism all over the world and are oblivious to the damage they have caused.

They are obviously ignorant of the whole story of Israel’s birth, when in 1948 the Jewish people were offered by the UN a portion of the land originally set aside for them in 1921 – and the Arab Palestinians were offered the other half.

The Arabs rejected the offer, and the Jews accepted – only to be attacked by five surrounding Arab countries committed to driving them into the sea.  The Arabs tried again in 1967 and again in 1973.

Each time, the Jews prevailed, but not without great loss of life.  And yet, Israel has always labored for a peaceful relation with its Arab neighbors.  It voluntarily returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt in return for peace, and gave the Palestinians all of Gaza as a peace gesture.

What was the response?  The Palestinians elected Hamas, a terrorist organization, and they immediately began firing thousands of rockets into Israel.

I am asking all my peers who signed that poison letter against Israel to examine their motives.  Can you take back the fire of anti-Semitism that is raging all over the world now?

You should hang your heads in shame.  You should come forth with deep regrets for what you did – and ask for forgiveness from the suffering people in Israel.

Progressive Alec Baldwin Claims Obama has Been Prevented from doing New Spending

Posted by Steve Markowitz on April 11, 2011

Progressives have generally been a cagey group.  Knowing that their radical agenda would be unpopular with mainstream America, they typically front educated and articulate individuals who use couched terms and cute slogans to camouflage true intent.

Refreshingly, a rather inarticulate and not so well-educated Alec Baldwin recently spouted off without access to Leftist taking points or a teleprompter.  Here’s some of his logic when asked about the failed Obama Presidency:

“Well, I mean, I think so because I think that when you come into office and you want to put your mark on things – this is just my opinion, when you want to put your mark on things, you want to be able to spend.  And what’s crippled Obama’s administration, as far as I’m concerned, is the financial crisis and it’s prevented him from doing any new spending“.

Baldwin, with typical Progressive logic, believes that those in government should be judged on how much of the peoples’ money they spend, with no mention of results.  Then he proves the limits of his knowledge when he claims Obama was “prevented him from doing any new spending”. President Obama has sent more money in the first two years of office than any president that preceded him.  What is Baldwin smoking?

Baldwin concludes by saying: “I think a second term of Obama, we’ll see a lot more of what we want to see from him.”

Didn’t this Hollywood elitist hear what the American people said in November about Obama’s first two years?  The sad answer is probably yes.  But to Progressives like Baldwin, the word “we” typically refers to fellow elitist, not the greater American people.

Stars Profited from Relationships with Gadhafi Family

Posted by Steve Markowitz on March 8, 2011

The cats been let out of the bag.  Some of America’s biggest pop stars have had an unsavory relationship with the family of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, making in the neighborhood of $1 million dollars per hour playing at family gatherings around the world.  Here’s what’s been reported so far:

  • Beyonce did New Year’s exclusive performance in 2009 for the clan a posh club in St. Barts paid for Hannibal Gadhafi, a son of the Colonel.
  • Nelly Furtado was paid a $1 million by the Gadhafi’s for a 45 minute gig in Italy.
  • Usher and Mariah Carey have both admitted being paid to perform by the Gadhafi clan.

Once the news of their dancing with the devil became public, the stars promised to donate funds to charities.  Buying absolution is alive and well!

Capitalism allows these entertainers to earn a living, even if that means selling their wares to some unsavory characters.  However, the Hollywood and entertainment elites who continually camouflage their greed behind Leftist causes show their hypocrisy in the way they live.

Hollywood Distorts Truth of the Valerie Plame Affair

Posted by Steve Markowitz on December 10, 2010

It is remarkable what emanates from the elitists in Hollywood give Tinseltown’s motivation: greed.  While they sometimes (rarely) create art, more often they produce salacious material based on sex and gratuitous violence.  This reality creates dissonance within Hollywood.  There inner yearning is to be considered artists, but they make their living on a lower tier.  The guilt pushes many Hollywood elitists towards radical Leftist causes.

Yesterday, columnist Judith Miller once again exposed Hollywood’s Leftist agenda in her op-ed The Plame Affair, Hollywood Style.   Ms. Miller destroys the “facts” included in the film “Fair Game” starring Naomi Watts.  Fair Game is about ex CIA agent Valerie Plame who was outed in a column written by Richard Novak during the Bush presidency.  The Left’s version of this outing as depicted in the movie was that it related to Plame’s husband, Joseph C. Wilson IV, who took a position opposing Bush’s intervention into Iraq.  Ms. Miller shows that premise to be false.

Judith Miller is more than merely a columnist when it comes to the Valerie Plame affair.  She was a part of the story.  In mid 2005 Miller was sent to jail for refusing to disclose her confidential source used for a Plame story.  That is one of many facts conveniently not mentioned in “Fair Game.”  Miller points to other distortions in the film, including:

  • Contrary to the film’s portrayal, the revelation of Ms. Plame’s identity did not cause the CIA to abandon contacts among Iraqi scientists.
  • As the film would have it, the CIA’s leadership resisted the notion that Saddam Hussein had WMD and challenged the intelligence being provided to the White House.  …. In fact, the agency led the effort to draft the National Intelligence Estimate in 2002 that concluded with “high confidence” on behalf of more than a dozen intelligence agencies that Iraq had chemical and biological weapons and an active nuclear program.
  • If there was a grand plot to punish Mr. Wilson for his candor by outing his wife, as the film suggests, no one was ever indicted for it. Patrick Fitzgerald, the special prosecutor who would have indicted the proverbial ham sandwich, never indicted anyone for having outed Ms. Plame.
  • The person who first leaked the fact that Mr. Wilson’s wife worked at the CIA to conservative columnist Robert Novak – who published that information, and her name, despite his opposition to the Iraq war – was not a White House official.  He was State Department official Richard Armitage.  Like his boss, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Mr. Armitage was critical of the push to war.  Yet Mr. Armitage has no on-screen role in the film. He is mentioned only in the film’s text epilogue.
  • Fair Game” suggests that Ms. Plame’s outing inflicted severe damage on the CIA’s sources.  But this, too, may be untrue.  In a letter to the Washington Post on Nov. 12, R.E. Pound, a retired CIA agent who helped assess the damage allegedly caused by the leak at one location, concluded: “There was none.”  He also challenged as “ludicrous” Ms. Plame’s claim, echoed in the film, that her outing forced her resignation.

Fair Game is based on books written by the couple, Wilson and Plame.  Wilson called the movie “fair and accurate“.  Ms. Miller makes the compelling case that it is neither.  Let’s see: Miller’s livelihood does not depend on which account is accurate; Wilson and Plame have already profited handsomely from the story, living in an expensive home in Sante Fe and make a living giving speeches about WMD and the Bush administration.  You make the call on who is being truthful.

Ms. Miller’s opening comment in her op-ed shows the movie to be pure fiction, if not part propaganda: An antiwar State Department official leaked the spy’s name.  You won’t find that in the plot of Fair Game.”

The media and Left in general treat the truth differently based in political motivations.  When President Bush told the American people that there were WMD’s in Iraq and that was proved wrong, he lied.  Conversely, when President Obama promised that with the passage of his Stimulus Package the unemployment rate would not exceed 8% and it subsequently went to 10%, he merely made an error.  The truth is that both were but bad judgment.

Roman Polanski the Rapist and the Hollywood Crowd

Posted by Steve Markowitz on October 1, 2009

polanskiThe law finally caught up with Roman Polanski when he was arrested in Switzerland last week on a US arrest warrant.  The case involved a rape of a 13-year-old girl for which Polanski pleaded guilty in 1977.  During a photo-shoot for French Vogue magazine, Polanski gave the teenage girl champagne and Quaaludes and forced himself on her, but later claimed it was consensual.  With a 13-year old girl?  Come on!

After pleading guilty, the Judge sent Polanski to prison for 42-days for psychiatric evaluation.  When Polanski learned that the Judge might give him another 48 days in jail, Polanski, the coward fled, the country. Read the rest of this entry »
