It looks like the country is going to get major healthcare reform, whether or not we want it. The bill currently being debated in the Senate is referred to as the Baucus Bill, since it is being shepherded by Senator Max Baucus, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.
A sensitive area in the discussion of healthcare reform revolves around cost. Most Americans will not support another expensive entitlement program. Responding to this sensitivity, President Obama has promised that any plan he approves will be deficit neutral, not add to the nation’s already huge budget deficit. Given that the government’s history of underestimating the cost of any program, this is just not credible.
