Michael Bloomberg Warns Students of Danger from Being Coddled

Posted by Steve Markowitz on May 2, 2016

While this Blog tends to support libertarian type conservative principles, there are voices on the Left that offer positive points of view on society and the political discourse.  Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York City, is one such politician.

Bloomberg is known for speaking his mind irrespective of dogmatic political views.  He was at it again this past weekend during a commencement speech at the University of Michigan, according to CNN.  During his presentation, Bloomberg attacked political correctness and its anti-intellectual approaches at the university level that include “safe spaces”.  Bloomberg’s comments in the video below included:

The fact that some university boards and administrations now bow to pressure groups, and shield students from these ideas through safe spaces, code words, and trigger warnings, is in my view a terrible mistake.  The whole purpose of college is to learn how to deal with difficult situations, not to run away from them,” and “A microaggression is exactly that, micro.  But in a macro sense, one of the most dangerous places on a college campus is the so-called safe space, because it creates a false impression that we can isolate ourselves from those who hold different views.  We can’t, and we shouldn’t try.  Not in politics, not in the workplace.”

It is refreshing to hear a politician share such straight talk.  While this Blogger disagrees with many of Bloomberg’s stated positions, those disagreements do not overshadow the importance and courage Bloomberg shows in attacking some of the greatest dangers to American’s freedom.  Compare this to the doubletalk coming from likely candidates for the Democrat and Republican parties.  There are better choices, but they are not currently running for the presidency.

WELL STATED!! Hopefully, his ‘message’ will get great coverage, but perhaps that is asking for too much.
