Discussion of Race on CNN-II

Posted by Steve Markowitz on August 13, 2013

On July 29, this Blog posted A Discussion of Race on CNN that included CNN commentator’s Don Lemon’s ideas on self-empowerment within the African-American community.  As an African-American, Lemon opened himself up for criticism that often comes from the Left when the issue of personal responsibility is raised within the community.  These attacks on individuals such as Lemon inevitably come irrespective of their political leanings or race.

One who attacked Lemon this time was Russell Simmons, a hip-hop mogul who has made millions peddling gangsta rap that promotes violence, misogyny and is free to use the N-word.  Simmons refused to address Lemon one-on-one on CNN, but instead used Twitter for the attacks.  Lemon, using the power of his position on CNN, responded on air brilliantly, as seen in the video below.

Lemon does not suggest that racism is addressed in his comments concerning self-empowerment and personal responsibility.  However, he clearly understands the importance of these issues in the discussion of race.
