Leftist Hypocrisy: Liberal Magazine Finally Pays Minimum Wage

Posted by Steve Markowitz on August 12, 2013

The example below of Leftist hypocrisy was posted in the Conservative Intelligence Briefing.  While the leftist magazine, The Nation, attacks Walmart for paying minimum wage in, it turns out their concern for workers’ wages only relates to those that do not work for their own magazine.  It was reported that The Nation has paid its interns less than minimum wage and is now just catching up to that wage rate.  However, they have the unmitigated gall to attack Walmart on its superior wage policies.

Once again the Left’s moral outrage is shown to be fraudulent.  But once again you got to give it to the Left.  Their ability to create a false narrative is a marvelous thing.

This story in the Daily Beast, about a tiff between Walmart and the left-wing magazine  The Nation, is awesome:

The Nation recently posted an open letter to company CEO Mike Duke and the Walmart board of directors demanding that Walmart start paying its workers a minimum wage $12 an hour.  The letter also includes an online petition that readers can sign.

Walmart is clearly growing tired of being a punching bag and poster child for low wages.  So on Wednesday morning, Steven Restivo, a senior director of communications at Walmart, sent out a snarky email directed at The Nation under the subject line: “people who live in glass houses…”

The Nation—“America’s leading progressive print and online magazine”—recently encouraged its readers to sign an open letter demanding that Walmart increase wages to $12/hour and this article called our company one of the “biggest abusers of low-wage labor.”

In an ironic twist, ProPublica recently reported that starting this fall, “interns at the Nation Institute will be paid minimum wage for the first time in the history of the 30-year-old program.” As ProPublica noted, The Nation has been paying its full-time interns a weekly stipend of $150 per week – less than the current federal minimum wage rate of $7.25 per hour.

The piece (which you should read in its entirety) notes that The Nation, which is based in New York City, recently agreed to pay all of its interns minimum wage –  which is still $7.25 per hour in New York State until it rises to $8 at the end of this year (and eventually to $9).  They had been receiving a stipend of just $150 a week.

The kicker, however, which the piece does not note, is that the average Walmart associate in New York State makes $13.03 per hour, which is 80 percent more than The Nation will be paying its interns even now.  Consider It an economics lesson for the ideologues – some workers are more highly valued by their employers than others.
