Susan Rice Gets Promoted

Posted by Steve Markowitz on June 5, 2013

President Obama once again showed that he values political loyalty over competence.  With the retirement today of his National Security Adviser, Tom Donilon, Obama announced that new Adviser will be Susan Rice, current American ambassador to the United Nations.

The National Security Advisor does not require Senatorial confirmation and therefore the President has the right to appoint whoever he chooses.  However, the appointment of Rice is disappointing given her history.

The New York Times reported that Rice was a major proponent of the military intervention by the West into the Libyan Civil War.  The result of that war is a strengthening in the region of Islamist terrorists.  The resulting breakdown security in Libya ultimately lead to the killing of four Americans including the US ambassador at the Benghazi consulate in September, 2012.

After the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Rice became a loyal foot soldier of the President and went on the talk show circuit to promote the false narrative that the attack was caused by a reaction to some obscure Internet video.  Instead of apologizing for this gross error, or better yet resigning, she and the entire Obama Administration circled the wagons, made excuses and obfuscated.

Ms. Rice was originally Obama’s choice to succeed Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.  However, that position required Senate approval.  Given Rice’s Libyan misstatements that would have been problematic and embarrassing for the President and her nomination was withdrawn.  This did not stop the President from rewarding his loyal foot soldier even though her appointment as National Security Advisor will feed the flames of partisan politics.

In making the announcement of Rice’s new appointment, Obama said: “With her background as a scholar, Susan understands that there’s no substitute for American leadership.  She is At once passionate and pragmatic.  I think everybody understands Susan is a fierce champion for justice and human dignity, but she’s also mindful that we have to exercise our power wisely and deliberately.”  Once again the President shows a penchant for eloquent words that do not meet reality.
