IRS’s Lois Lerner Forced to Take Leave

Posted by Steve Markowitz on May 23, 2013

The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) announced today that it has placed controversial employee Lois Lerner on “administrative leave”  Lerner, who was the IRS’s Director of Exempt Organizations, was forced to take the leave after her rather lame appearance before Congress the on May 22.  After proclaiming innocence of any wrongdoing in the affair in which the IRS targeted conservative leaning organizations, Lerner took the Fifth, refusing to answer any questions as they might force her to self-incriminate.

Her statement, seen in the video clip below, included:

I have not done anything wrong, I have not broken any laws, I have not violated any IRS rules or regulations and I have not provided false information to this or any other congressional committee.  While I would very much like to answer the committee’s questions today, I have been advised by my counsel to assert my constitutional right not to testify or answer questions related to the subject manner of this hearing.”  She then added:  “I know that some people will assume I have done something wrong.  I have not.  One of the basic functions of the Fifth Amendment is to protect innocent individuals, and that is the protection I am invoking today.”

Ms. Lerner, the public knows laws have been broken and you were involved with the breaches.  The key question is how far into the White House this trampling of American’s liberties and rights goes.  Another interesting question is whether you will take the fall for this matter or will you throw your partners under the bus?
