U.S. Senate Approves First Budget and Four Years

Posted by Steve Markowitz on March 25, 2013

The narrative often coming from the White House and its comrades in the mainstream media is that the Congress is a group of obstructionists that accomplished little since the Republicans took control over two years ago.  While there is some legitimacy to the claims, they are made to obfuscate the reality of the dysfunctional nature of a Democrat controlled Senate.

The Senate is supposed to pass a budget annually.  However, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, last week it passed its first budget in four years.  The budget passed by a mere one vote with four Democratic senators opposing it.

The Democratic budget is pure partisan politics promoting the Party’s philosophy of wealth redistribution and debt.  It includes over $1 trillion of new taxes during the next decade.  In typical class warfare style, Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray proclaimed: “The solution to our fiscal challenges will not be found in deep cuts to programs that vulnerable families depend on.”  Inherent in Murray’s statement is the claim that there is no significant waste in government spending, a laughable conclusion.

Politics is the art of promising one’s constituents benefits taken from others.  Both political parties have been guilty of this perverse form of crony capitalism.  However, there is a difference today.  When Republicans are in power an independent press is willing to take them to task for corruption.  There is no longer similar constraint offered by the press when it comes to their party, the Democrats.  The result is $6 trillion of increased debt under Barack Obama’s first term and crony capitalism that has been taken to new heights.
