Government Closes Guantánamo Bay Closing Office

Posted by Steve Markowitz on February 1, 2013

In one of his first acts after becoming President four years ago, Barack Obama signed a decree promising to close America’s terrorist prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.  This, like many other Obama promises, has unapologetically gone unfulfilled.

The New York Times has reported that this week the State Department has reassigned its special envoy for closing the Guantánamo Bay prison, Daniel Fried, and will not replace, him effectively closing the department set up the close the prison.

So what does the government do with Mr. Fried for his failure to close Gitmo?  The State Department reassigned him as a coordinator for Middle East policies.  You can’t make this stuff up!
