Obama’s Set up 501(C) Organization

Posted by Steve Markowitz on January 21, 2013

michelle-obamaThe Obama for President Campaign has gone where no presidential campaign went before it.  Last week it turned itself into a 501(c) 4 non-profit organization to promote its political agenda.  The name of this entity is “Organization For Action” and it was introduced on video by First Lady Michelle Obama.

In an email to supporters concerning Organization For Action, the President is quoted: “We’ve got to keep working on growing the economy from the middle out, along with making meaningful progress on the issues we care about – immigration reform, climate change, balanced deficit reduction, reducing gun violence, and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.”  This agenda is telling totally ignoring the issues important to Red states’ voters.  This is yet another indication that there has, in fact, been no more partisan a president in modern American history.

The irony of the Obama announcement nearly humorous, as reported in freedomoutpost.com:

Democrats and liberals bashed the Koch brothers, Sheldon Adelson and other conservatives who spearheaded hundreds of millions of dollars in secret donations to groups like Crossroads GPS and Americans for Prosperity during the 2012 campaign.  Obama, while raising over $1 billion himself, repeatedly lamented the influence of big money.

Ironically, under the law, a super PAC would be more transparent.  Unlike a super PAC, which has to file regular reports with the Federal Election Commission, the 501(c)4 non-profits don’t have to disclose their donors or amounts, so it’s up to each group to decide what (if anything) it makes public and when (if ever) that happens.

As a 501(c), the Obama’s Organization For Action will be able to accept unlimited corporate contributions with few requirements to publicize the donors.  This is another nail in the coffin of Obama’s promised transparency.  Mary Boyle of Cmmon Cause said it bluntly: It’s ironic and puzzling that a grassroots organization with a public interest agenda is going to take unlimited corporate money.  It doesn’t square.  There’s one reason that corporations spends money on politics–they’re looking for something in return.

Even some hard Left organizations see the danger in the Obama’s actions.  Adam Green, cofounder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee complained: “They won’t take money from MoveOn, Democracy for America, or Progressive Change Campaign Committee PACs, but will accept million-dollar checks from Bank of America and Goldman Sachs? What’s the principle there?  No big bank or corporation will donate million-dollar checks to OFA without the expectation that it will impact which issues they engage on, and that’s very troubling.

It is likely that the Obama’s are raising this war-chest not only to push their agenda, but as a tool to attack those who disagree with their programs.  Adding to this likelihood is the fact that this new organization is being run by Obama 2012 campaign manager Jim Messina and longtime Obama pal and advisor David Axelrod, as well as other members of the Obama team.

Four years ago Barack Obama indicated that his inauguration would not include corporate sponsorship.  Today the Country celebrated the inauguration of Obama’s second term.  The inauguration was paid for with large corporate donations including $250,000 from Exxon Mobil.  Much has change in four years.  Crony capitalism, however, is back in full force.
