Obama’s Lame Response to Gun Violence

Posted by Steve Markowitz on January 16, 2013

Since just after last month’s Newtown, Connecticut school tragedy, President Obama and his Leftist allies have used the  massacre to further a political agenda whose goal is to limit American’s gun rights.  Obama appointed VP Joe Biden to head a commission with the purported purpose of studying violence in America, but was little more than a ruse to attack gun ownership.

Obama GunsToday Obama announced suggestions to quell gun violence.  This was a lame demonstration of political posturing that included a photo op with clean-cut American youths and a smiling Joe Biden.  Contrast the look of portrayed by these youngsters with the comments that the President made after the shooting of Trayvon Martin last year when he indicated that: “If I had a son, he‘d look like Trayvon”.  Why then didn’t the President include young people in hoodies in the photo?  The answer is simple; that photo would not fit his desired narrative or agenda.

The President’s proposals will do little to reduce the violence of modern America.  These recommendations included banning assault rifles, placing limits on high-capacity magazines, expanded background checks for gun purchasers, and eliminating the availability of certain armor piercing ammunition.

In making announcements, Obama supported his proposals saying: “In the days ahead, I intend to use whatever weight this office holds to make them a reality.  If there’s even one life that can be saved, then we’ve got an obligation to try.”  In addition, he said: “This is our first task as a society.  Keeping our children safe.  This is how we will be judged. And their voices should compel us to change.”

The President’s words are but a cover for his political agenda.  If Obama was truly concerned with saving “even one life”, his comments would have been broader and included the issues of violence in our pop culture, violent video games targeted at America’s young men, unfit parents, and in general the need to understand what has changed in society causing our young people to become violent.  His near silence on these issues was deafening with Obama merely promising to “launch a national dialogue” on mental health.  This is a copout given that many of the mass assassins have a history of mental illness.

Obama and the Left’s focus on assault rifles demonstrate the bad intent or at best there ignorance.  While the assault rifle attack in Newtown, Connecticut was horrific, these weapons account for a only small percentage of gun murders in the United States.  According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 6,220 people were killed in United States by handguns in 2011 compared to only 323 for all types of rifles.  In addition, mass murders have been perpetrated without assault rifles including the 2011 attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords that resulted in six deaths and others wounded with a handgun.

While some of the President’s recommendations may be appropriate, his overall sales pitch is counter=productive.  They allow the Country to avoid a realistic discussion on the problems, an obfuscation that will result in more killings in the future.

Adam Lanza, the killer of the Connecticut children, used in assault rifle even though such weapons are banned in Connecticut.  Further, he did not purchase the gun and therefore would not have been caught in any added background check.  The most significant cause of the Newtown tragedy was the fact that a mentally ill individual gained access to guns.  More specifically, this individual was given this access and trained how to use the weapons by his mother.  Where are the President’s comments concerning parental responsibility?  The mainstream media has also been silent on the issue of this unfit parent, in part because she was killed in the tragedy and because this subject hinders the Left’s political agenda.

If the President and those on the Left truly believed that guns cause of America’s growing violence, then an honest approach would be for them to call for total gun-control and not merely focus on a type of weapon used in a small minority of murders.  This disconnect is not by chance.  The Left avoids breaching this approach, even though it is their ultimate goal, for fear that such discussions would lead to areas unfavorable to their constituents including the gaming industry, Hollywood, the mental health industry, and the pharmaceutical industry.  Their sleight-of-hand is disingenuous and morally repugnant.
