France Attacks Mali Rebels after American Policies Fail

Posted by Steve Markowitz on January 14, 2013

The Wall Street Journal reported that French jets attacked radical Islamists in north Mali this past weekend.  France took the military action after it became evident that America’s less aggressive approach that involves training a Malian military capable of combating the Islamist’s had failed.  France took this action even though the Obama Administration resisted it, supposedly due to the fear that it would increase local loyalty for the jihadists.

America’s failure in Mali is disappointing on various fronts.  It is an example of how far America’s stature in the world has decreased in recent years, now playing second fiddle to a European military action.  In addition, the Journal reported that some of the jihadists fighting the West’s interests in Mali on the same Libyan rebels supported by the United States and NATO last year.
