Bob Costas Rants Against Gun Ownership

Posted by Steve Markowitz on December 8, 2012

Last weekend Kansas City Chief pro football player Jevon Beltcher murdered his girlfriend Casandra Perkeins and then committed suicide.  This was a personal tragedy for all involved.

Unfortunately, the tragedy is being used to promote a political agenda by some on the Left who immediately placed blame on the gun rather than the perpetrator of the heinous act.  NBC sports commentator, Bob Costas, last Sunday used his podium as announcer at a nationally televised football game to share a rant against guns included in the video posted below.

During Costas’ diatribe, he proffered the view that the football player and his girlfriend would not be dead had there been stricter gun control laws.  It is remarkable that when murder is committed, possibly the most serious breach of law, Progressives believe that adding more laws will somehow correct the problem.  Ludicrous!

Costas referred to Kansas City sports columnist, Jason Whitlock, as a source of wisdom on the subject of guns.  Whitlock has turned this tragedy into a race issue when he recently said: “I believe the NRA is the new KKK.  And that the arming of so many black youths, uh, and loading up our community with drugs, and then just having an open shooting gallery, is the work of people who obviously don’t have our best interests.”  The fact that Costas had to refer to a race-baiter like Whitlock for expertise on gun control is indication that he is ill-equipped to comment on the subject.

There are many outside influences that could have played a role in Jevon Beltcher’s act of violence.  Certainly he is in a violent sport that has caused head injuries to many players.  In addition, Beltcher’s generation has been raised on violent video games, movies and music.  Costas focus on guns and while ignoring the industries that pay his salary is telling.

Today, tragedy has hit another NFL player.  It has been reported that Dallas cowboy tackle Josh Brent has been arrested for potential intoxication manslaughter after driving a car that flipped, resulting in the death of fellow cowboy player Jerry Brown.  Who will Costas blame for this tragedy?
