Obama, the Divisive President

Posted by Steve Markowitz on November 5, 2012

There were multiple reasons behind Barack Obama’s victory in the 2008presidential election.  Some related to Republican ineptness.  The second term of George W. Bush was a failure as the result of a poorly executed war in Iraq and running huge deficits that do not fit within conservative fiscal policy.  In addition, the economy had just tanked as a result of the pop housing bubble.

In addition to the above, many Americans believed that the election of Country’s first African-American president could help bridge the long simmering divisions within the Country based on ethnicity, as well as other differences.  Unfortunately, President Obama squandered his political capital and has become one of the more divisive presidents in US history.

The growing divisiveness in the United States was evident during the last four years during which cooperation between Republicans and Democrats has been nonexistent.  While the President and his associates blame this entirely on Republican obstructionism, both parties and the President are equally culpable.

While President Obama has in the past preached the need for civility in politics, his bid for reelection has been fitting of old-time Chicago ward politics.  This has included significant usage of race-baiting.  VP Joe Biden, for example, used a metaphor at an African-American audience that stated: “They’re going to put y’all back in chains.”  While the meaning of this emotional metaphor is clear to an African-American audience, the Left attempted to make excuses and deflect from its significance.

The race-baiting use by the left has become so pervasive that it’s narrative is becoming part of the upbringing of some African-American children.  For example, in a recent campaign rally in Florida featuring First Lady Michelle Obama, a nine-year-old boy was asked why he wanted Obama to win a second term.  As shown in the video below, the young man stated:  “Because if Mitt Romney win, we’ll be going back to the crop fields.  We’ll be picking crops.”  While the child’s father could be heard laughing at the comment in the video, the false narrative is no laughing matter.  It is a further indication of the divisiveness caused by the Left in general and Barack Obama more specifically.  So much for another broken Obama promised to be a post-racial leader.
