Obama has Polarized the Country

Posted by Steve Markowitz on October 14, 2012

During a 60 Minutes interview, President Obama was asked about his biggest disappointment since being elected president.  The President responded:

“I’m the first one to confess that the spirit that I brought to Washington, that I wanted to see instituted, where we weren’t constantly in a political slugfest … I haven’t fully accomplished that. Haven’t even come close in some cases…. My biggest disappointment is that we haven’t changed the tone in Washington as much as I would have liked.”

Boston Globe writer Jeff Jacoby published an article relating to this issue titled “Obama, the great divider” concerning the polarizing impact Barack Obama has had on the Country.  While politicians are by their very nature partisan, the President has taken this to a new level.  Making it even more tragic is the fact candidate Obama promised to transcend such differences and bring change to the way Washington does business.

Some on the Left have made excuses for the President’s divisive behavior blaming Republicans for attempting to thwart his political agenda.  However, this is the norm for the opposition party as immediate predecessors George W. Bush and Bill Clinton encountered.  As Jacoby correctly concludes, “Obama never conditioned ‘hope and change’ on GOP support for his agenda.  His condition was that he be elected.

Independent publications have noted the Obama Administration’s divisive tactics with Politico recently reporting:  “Obama and his top campaign aides have engaged far more and “the Obama-led attacks on Romney’s character,” and the attacks “have been both relentless and remorseless.”  New York Magazine’s John Heilemann earlier wrote: “For anyone still starry-eyed about Obama, the months ahead will provide a bracing revelation about what he truly is: not a savior, not a saint, not a man above the fray, but a brass-knuckled, pipe-hitting, red-in-tooth-and-claw brawler determined to do what is necessary to stay in power.”  So much for the promise of hope and change.

Barack Obama has taken the Left’s tool of dividing Americans into subsets to a dangerous level.  He has increased tensions between rich and poor, black and white, women and men, Hispanics and non-Hispanics, people of religion and those who do not believe, gays and straights, and so many others.  The President actions show him to be nothing more than a bare knuckles Chicago- politician who is more concerned with his own political gain than the Country’s overall welfare.
