Biden–Ryan Debate Was Lively

Posted by Steve Markowitz on October 12, 2012

Last night’s debate between VP Joe Biden and Republican VP candidate Paul Ryan was lively.  Irrespective of one’s political leanings it showed two competent debaters.  This was in contrast to the first presidential debate between Obama and Romney that showed the President as an incompetent and detached debater.

The theme of the debate was straightforward.  Ryan attacked the Obama Administration’s performance on the economy and in foreign policy.  Biden attacked the positions taken by the Romney–Ryan team on various issues, especially economic ones.  This difference offers electorate a clear choice.  Either the Country gives the Obama Administration another four years to continue down a similar path traveled during the past four years or it seeks a new approach under a Romney administration.

The outcome of the vice presidential debate was more difficult to judge then the first presidential debate.  A CNN/ORC International Poll of registered voters that watch the debate indicated by a 48% to a 44% that Ryan won the debate.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the debate was demeanor exhibited by Biden.  He was often seen smirking or smiling while Ryan was speaking.  Some viewers perceived this as disrespectful and inappropriate behavior.  This issue will have little effect on the hard-core supporters on either side, but may impact some undecided voters especially women.
