Anti-Islam Filmmaker Arrested

Posted by Steve Markowitz on September 28, 2012

It is reported that the producer of low-budget amateur film “Innocence of Muslims” has been arrested in Los Angeles.  Nakoula Basseley, who is on probation for a fraud charge, was arrested for supposedly violating the terms of his probation prohibiting him from using a computer or the Internet without supervision.  This trumped up excuse for arresting Basseley sets a dangerous precedent with the radical extremists and places American’s Constitutional rights at risk.

Radical Islamists use the excuse of a video that few even knew about prior to the protests for barbaric behavior.  In addition, it has since become apparent that the Obama Administration lied to the American people when it indicated thay the video was the spark for the protests that led to the Benghazi consulate attack and the murder of US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.  Two days after the attack Secretary of State Clinton publicly called the video “disgusting and reprehensible“.  She also criticized the video in a joint press conference with Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar.  Even more problematic was America’s United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice who claimed that the Benghazi killings were the result of spontaneous protests emanating from Muslim anger relating to the video.  It has since become public that the intelligence people in the Obama Administration knew this claim to be false within a day of the attack.

This week President Obama spoke at the United Nations and once again inferred that the amateur video was somehow responsible for the violent behavior in various Islamic countries by proclaiming that the American government had nothing to do with its creation.  Then, he made the following statement:

The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.  But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied.  Let us condemn incitement against Sufi Muslims and Shiite pilgrims.”

While the President’s words are reasonable, his actions prove them insincere.  Why has the President made such a vocal and public pronouncement concerning a low-budget video with so much anti-Christian and anti-Semitic words and works being every day part of not only the Islamic world, but also radical Leftist in the United States?  For example:

  • Even before being elected, Obama indicated a willingness to negotiate with the virulently anti-Semitic Iranian government.  Its current president went on yet another anti-Semitic rant in the same chambers that Obama spoke this week.
  • Currently, at New York’s Edward Tyler Nahem Gallery, a disgusting piece of art titled Piss Christ went on display for a month.  This distasteful attack on Christianity has been around for over 20 years and was initially funded by the US government-backed National Endowment for the Arts.  Where is the Left’s and Obama’s outrage?

The U.S. Constitution guarantees Americans the right of free expression, no matter how distasteful.  Instead of apologizing for this special American right, the President should unequivocally explain to the Islamic world and other totalitarian countries of the power that free speech offers the People.  It is also time for the President to publicly call Islamic governments on their anti-Semitic and anti-Christian rhetoric that has been a part of their cultures for decades, if not longer.
