Romney Picks Paul Ryan for VP Slot

Posted by Steve Markowitz on August 12, 2012

On Saturday Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, announced his choice of Wisconsin Republican Congressman Paul Ryan to be his running mate.  Choosing Paul Ryan makes a significant statement concerning Romney’s priorities.

While the Ryan choice will be viewed positively by most conservatives, his greatest strength is in the subject of economics.  He clearly gets the fiscal mess America’s finances are in.  Between Romney’s business acumen and Ryan’s economic knowledge, the focus of the Romney Ryan ticket will clearly be the United States economic challenges.

Often conservatives are placed under one general label which is an oversimplification.  Conservatives can be divided into two categories: those who are conservative based on social concerns and those who are conservative on economic issues.  While these two important topics often crossover, they are indeed very different.

Romney had the opportunity to choose Marco Rubio from Florida, who is indeed a bright and articulate Republican.  However, Rubio’s greatest asset for the ticket would have been political, especially with Hispanic voters, and he is still relatively new to national politics.  Romney could have chosen one of successful young Republican governors such as Bobby Jindal or Tim plenty.  However, their success has so far been limited to statewide politics.  Finally, Romney could have chosen a Republican who is focused on conservative social issues.

Mitt Romney’s choice of Paul Ryan for the VP slot is the correct one.  The greatest challenge and danger facing the United States is not from a foreign source or a changing social issue.  The Country must get its economic house in order to promote the well-being of any one group of Americans and in fact all Americans.  Paul Ryan gets the economics that matter.  It remains to be seen whether the Romney-Ryan ticket can get this important message across to the voters

He is the correct choice indeed. Ryan is bright, articulate and has a great command of economic issues. He is also media savvy and is not likely to be put in a corner by a trick question from the media. I can’t wait for the vice presidential debate to watch Paul Ryan dismantle Joe Biden like cheap dorm furniture.
