Obama Asserts Executive Privilege in Fast and Furious Documents

Posted by Steve Markowitz on June 20, 2012

In an incredible act of stupidity, the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in 2009 allowed over 2,000 weapons to be transported from the United States to drug cartels in Mexico.  The purpose of this sting operation that is known as Fast and Furious was to determine who was receiving the weapons.  Predictably some of these weapons were used in violent crimes including a 2010 shooting that resulted in the death of a US border agent.

Clearly Fast and Furious was a poorly thought out plan that played a part in the death of innocent people.  For the past year and a half Congress has been probing Fast and Furious during which there had been indications of a cover-up in the Justice Department.  Atty. Gen. Eric Holder has been withholding documents subpoenaed by Congress who is now considering issuing a contempt citation against the AG.

With that of the contempt citation imminent, President Obama today asserted executive privilege in an effort to hinder Congress’s probing of Fast and Furious.  While the President has the Constitutional authority to claim the privilege, is timing is very suspect.  If this privilege was to be claimed, it should have been used months ago.  It is likely that Obama delayed it to further stall the Congressional probe until after the election.  This is more evidence that Obama’s campaign pledge for change and transparency in Washington was fallacious.
