Time Magazine Steps Over the Line with Breast-Feeding Photo

Posted by Steve Markowitz on May 14, 2012

Time magazine’s recent cover photo was outrageous, even by today’s anything goes voyeurism mentality of society.  The photo pictured 26-year-old Los Angeles mother Jamie Grumet breast-feeding her three-year-old son who is standing on a chair to get his fill.  Both mother and son are staring at the camera in an obviously staged pose.

The photo says much about American society today.  Forget for the moment any discussion of the moral issues involved, this is an outrageous example of the woman putting her personal gain and fame in front of the well-being of the child or anyone else she has a relationship with.  Given the proliferation of nude photographs available, Ms. Grumet could not have gotten such publicity by merely undressing.

In a day when there is much publicity surrounding childhood bullying, Ms. Grumet put her son up for ridicule for years to come.  Imagine what his young associates will do with the photo which will be passed around their cell phones and pasted on Facebook.  Shame on you Ms. Grumet and shame on you Time magazine for placing financial gain in front of a child’s well-being.
