Progressives Blame Bake Sales for Childhood Obesity

Posted by Steve Markowitz on May 10, 2012

The facts indicate that America’s growing waistline is a serious problem.  Businessweek reported that he rate of childhood obesity has tripled in the United States since 1980.

Typical of Progressives, give them a problem and they see opportunity, finding yet another reason for more governmental intervention.  To rescue American citizens from themselves, Progressives have found the culprit; bake sales.  The fact that bake sales have been a mainstay in this Country’s schools since long before Americans became obese does not get in the way of Progressive illogic.

As a result of pressures from various groups, states including, New York, California and Texas have created regulations limiting the type of foods that can be sold at bake sales.  Colorado and Massachusetts are considering going further, placing even more regulations on these fundraisers.

While the desire to increase the government’s authority and power are one reason for the Progressives attack on bake sales, there’s a more insidious one.  Given America’s growing problem with childhood obesity, a truly open dialogue on the issues may get into areas that detrimental to the Left’s view of society, parenting, and personal responsibility.  That would break the code of political correctnees.
