Senator Lugar Given the Boot

Posted by Steve Markowitz on May 9, 2012

Dick Lugar, Republican, lost his bid for a seven term in the Senate during the Republican primary this week in Indiana.  Lugar was defeated by Tea Party backed Richard Mourdock.

Lugar outspent the challenger by 3 to 1.  His defeat was in part due to Mourdock’s Tea Party backing.  However, it follows the anti-incumbent movement that has not only hit the United States since before the last midterm election, but Europe as well as indicated in recent elections in France and Greece.

In addition, a minor scandal erupted when it was reported that Lugar did not own a home in Indiana.  When visiting his home state, Lugar bill the taxpayers for hotel expenses.  The Lugar campaign blamed this on a staff error

Lugar is 80 years old and has been in the Senate since 1977.  These two facts and demonstrate a perversion of the governing class in Washington.  While many enter politics with the best of intentions, they too often are corrupted by power, money and fame that come with being a Senator or Congressman.

Irrespective of one’s political views, the People won when Dick Lugar lost his primary battle. While we cannot expect the politicians to place turn limits on themselves, we the People can enforce such limits at the ballot box.
