Panetta Costing Taxpayers $100,000 a Month for Personal Travel

Posted by Steve Markowitz on April 18, 2012

The Wall Street Journal reported on yet another fleecing of American taxpayers.  In article titled Panetta Says He Regrets Expense of Trips Home, the Journal reports that since taking the job as Defense Secretary in July 2011, Leon Panetta took 29 trips from Washington DC to his home in California at a cost of nearly $900,000.

When confronted with this huge taxpayer expense occurring at a time when the defense budget is being cut significantly, Panetta said: “I regret that it does … add costs that the taxpayer has to pick up.”  In all fairness to the Secretary, he is required to take a military transport when flying due to his security clearance.  However, the decision to take the 29th personal trips was his alone.

This huge travel bill for Panetta is but another example of the waste in Washington and the entitlement mentality that are politicians and bureaucrats have created.  What used to be service to one’s country and government has become a way to gain special privileges and wealth at the expense of taxpayers.  This unfortunate reality is one reason why so many Americans are against increasing the tax rate and amount of money flowing to Washington.
