Secret Service Agents Caught With Pants Down

Posted by Steve Markowitz on April 15, 2012

Prior to President’s Obama visiting Columbia to attend the Summit of the Americas, the Secret Service sent an advance team to prepare for presidential security.  However, instead of focusing at this important task, some of the agents got sidetracked by Colombian treasures.

The Wall Street Journal reported that 11 agents were placed on “administrative leave” and sent back to Washington this weekend for their indiscretion.  The agents were caught in their hotel with local prostitutes.  This is not only another example of government employees having a vacation at taxpayer expense, but much worse could have compromised the President’s security.

Incredibly, Secret Service Assistant Director Paul S. Morrissey said that the indiscretions  “had no impact on the Secret Service’s ability to execute a comprehensive security plan for the President’s visit to Cartagena.”  Unmentioned by Morrissey was the potential for blackmail by locals who discovered the trysts.

This incident with the Secret Service is another reminder that just like in the private sector, individuals who work for the government will pursue their own personal needs and greed.  This reality that was well understood by the Country’s Founders, should be enough to blunt the call for more government control over society and the economy.  However, those that make a living via the public sector will continue pursuing their own personal interests.
