Guns do not Increase Crime Rate

Posted by Steve Markowitz on March 22, 2012

Jeff Jacoby, a writer for the Boston Globe, recently published and informative article titled “A safer society with guns“.  It attacks one of the bed rock arguments of gun-control zealots who proffered a view that more guns in the hands of private citizens lead to increased crime.  However, the facts do not bear out that position.

Jacoby points out that in 2003 the University of Colorado’s campus ban on handguns violated state law that permits their carry by citizens.    The University of Colorado fought the decision that allowed it to continue the ban.  At the same time, another state university, Colorado State University, complied with the Supreme Court’s decision.  So who’s crime went up?  According to the Cato Institute, the gun-control university, University of Colorado, saw crime increase 35% since 2004, while the Colorado State University saw a drop of 60%.  Hmmmmm ….   While other factors could be at play, at the very least the influx of more guns at the one university certainly did not have a negative effect.

On a related story, Jacoby supplies reviews the situation in Washington DC.  In 2008 the United States Supreme Court  struck down DC’s ban on handguns.  It’s mayor then stated that the “more handguns in the District of Columbia will only lead to more handgun violence.”  However, he was dead wrong.  Murder has dropped from 186 during 2008 to only 108 in 2011, a larger decline in the percentage rate that has occurred nationwide.

For years Progressives have blamed the increasing crime rate on poverty and economic despair.  However, since the 2008 economic meltdown, the crime rate throughout the United States has dropped significantly.  Progressives have also blamed greater access to guns for the increase in violent crimes.  Neither of these theories stand up to reality checks.  That raises an interesting question: Do Progressives continually come to the wrong conclusions about society due to lack of logic or are they purposely proffering these views in an effort to give government more power?
